Graphic design plays a crucial role in communicating film to an audience. HOW TO TARGET THE EYE: FILM & DESIGN IN THE 21ST CENTURY is the first European summit specially focusing on film visual communication, aiming to discuss the state of the art of film graphics, in the real world, the digisphere and in between. Leading designers from all over the world are invited to talk about their work and discuss the role of film design in the 21st century. Different panels and working groups will be announced. The programme also contemplates a special tribute to the memory of Hans Hillmann’s groundbreaking film design work for Neue Kirchner Filmkunst. This summit is a collaboration between the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin and the Next Wave Program.

The film design competition is a central part of our program. After a thorough selection of entries by the DFFB students final works, the summit committee selected the graduation film ALTRI CANNIBALI, by Francesco Sossai (2020, 95 min), as the working object of this call for designers. We are now calling for entries, inviting all students, professionals, independent or employees, working for the public or private sector, regardless of their age or nationality to participate.

After registering, you’ll receive a screener link invitation to watch the film from Cinando Platform, as well as materials that include stills, billing block, synopsis and film excerpt. ( After clicking the link, you will need to register as a Guest if you do not have a Cinando account. This link is individual, watermarked, and cannot be shared with anyone else and for any other purpose than the Film Design Competition. The invitation link will expire in 30 days and you can play the film only once. 

Your application package should contain: 

  • 1 poster (required) 
  • 1 – 4 graphic elements or visual media, e.g. a GIF or animated stills

Submitted applications will be considered for the shortlist. The shortlisted works will be sent to a jury of three prominent professionals who will decide the winner. The jury members and winning prize will be announced soon. Shortlisted applications will be exhibited and discussed publicly by the jury during the 1st NEXT WAVE Summit “How to Target the Eye” on June 19th, 2021.

The copyright remains with the creators of the artwork. After the summit, and in agreement with the rights holders, DFFB might use the winning artwork for promotion of ALTRI CANNIBALI for the non-commercial exploitation of the film.

Please note that the winner will be asked to send an open artwork poster file (.psd, .ai, etc.) 

The winner of THE EYE PRIZE sponsored by Alphapanda will be announced during the online awards ceremony of How to Target the Eye Summit, on June 19th.
